If you’re wondering how to make life easier in the kitchen, look no further. We’ve collected some of our favorite kitchen hacks in one handy blog post. Read on to find out how to speed up nature’s ripening processes, cool your coffee with more coffee, and more…
1: Ripe ‘n ready – Make nature hurry the f*** up
Avocados. They’re delicious, but unless you buy the ‘ripe and ready’ variety, which are always more expensive, waiting for them to go from rock hard to delightfully soft and buttery takes a whole heap of patience. Luckily, all you need to ripen them the quick way is a regular brown paper bag. And this kitchen hack works for all fruits, not just avos. All you need to do is pop unripe fruits into a brown paper bag and fold it closed. This traps in a gas called ethylene, a naturally occurring hormone that allows fruit and veg to ripen, while still allowing the fruit to breath a bit. Your fruit will ripen at double the speed.
2: The secret sweetness of cooking with carrot
We all love a good, Italian tomato sauce, but sometimes your Napolitana can turn out a little bit on the tart side. Luckily, there’s a way to add a bit of sweetness that will take your sauce to the next level. All it takes is a touch of carrot to keep the acidity at bay. No one even needs to know your secret. Simply peel a carrot, simmer it with your sauce, and remove it before you serve it.
3: Put the potato peeler industry out of business
Peeling potatoes is nobody’s idea of fun. Luckily, the only people who have to do that are those that haven’t discovered this kitchen hack yet. To get your potatoes’ jackets to slip off easily, simply score the potatoes around their midsection and boil them at a simmer for 15 minutes. Then, remove them with tongs, and pop those spuds into a bowl of ice water. Let them cool down a bit and try take off their skin.
You’ll find the skin just slips off, which is great for saving time in the kitchen, but terrible news for those in the potato peeler industry.
